MYH is entirely dependent on independent community fundraising and individual donations. Anyone can fundraise – either as an individual or as part of a team. This is where you can make the biggest difference.
Because we are a small charity, every penny raised counts. Fundraising in your local community is a great way of raising money for people that really need our support and what’s more fundraising can be fun! At MYH we support the community and we need the community to support us in any way they can.
As well as one off donations our priority is to raise as many standing order donations as possible from the largest possible number of people. Smaller regular monthly donations will give MYH more sustainability in the long run.
There are range of opportunities to get involved in, depending on the amount of time you have and the skills and experience you each bring to the organisation. MYH has a very small fundraising team so whatever you do must be led and managed by you.
If you’re super busy with millions of things to do, then why not simply take a Jummah collection tin to your local Jummah/ISOC prayer room/event? Or organise a bake sale.
Other people may want to can lead on fundraising challenges activities such as organising a sponsored run, bunjee jumping or a trek and do something fun whilst raising money.
Or if you’ve got more time an contacts to offer, you might want to reach out to potential donors or corporates that may be interested in supporting MYH and get them on board.
When we have our Annual Dinner we always need people with experience and professional skills in running events to volunteer their time.
First of all decide what you want to do and drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know about your plans so that we are aware that you are fundraising on our behalf.
There are lots of different ideas to explore ranging from bake sales, sports events, dress down days to karaoke or even a fantasy football league. It can be anything you like! Think about where and when you'd like to hold the event and book a venue if you need to.
Ask your family and friends to get involved and help you.
Download a sponsorship form or set up an online fundraising page online with mydonate (see below).
Find out if your employer has a matched or payroll giving scheme and ask them if they would match what you raise and donate this to MYH.
If you care collecting funds from individuals, ensure you get them to declare if they are eligible for Gift Aid. This allows MYH to reclaim 25p of tax for every £1 collected and boosts the funds you raise. Try to collect email addresses from people who donate and get their permission for MYH to be added to the mailing list. This will help us to keep in touch with our donors and supporters.
Keep it Safe
Get sponsored by people you know and trust. Make sure that children are supervised and that they don't collect money from strangers. Make sure the venue is safe and think about managing crowds. Think about security if you are carrying money around - the safest thing is to pay it in straight away. You may need to take out insurance on the event.
Keep it Legal
Do not collect money on the streets without a license from your local authority or the police. If you are holding an event on private property remember to ask permission from the owner. Please do not make house to house collections - These are illegal without the permission of your local authority.
If you are a business please contact us if you would like to sell goods, services or run a promotion on our behalf.
Publicising Your Event
Let us know when you have finalised the details and we'll publicise your event on our website and mailing list. Social media is a great way to reach larger audiences. If you have funds to donate towards MYH fundraising activities you could advertise your event using posters and leaflets. Talk to local radio stations and newspapers to see if they will profile your activity.
After the Event
Please make sure all cheques are made payable to: "The Muslim Youth Helpline" and send them to: The Muslim Youth Helpline, 18 Rosemont Road London NW3 6NE. If you collect cash, keep it safe and either bank it and send us a cheque or bring it to us as soon as you can.
Please include any sponsorship forms and send us your name, address, telephone number and email address. Remember to thank everyone involved - you may also want to send some photos to your local radio station or newspaper.
Please note that Gift Aid is only applicable to UK residents who pay tax.
