| Prison Campaign |
MYH Eid Al Adha Campaign This Eid al Adha we sent 2765 gifts out to young offenders and women in prisons across the UK. This Eid marked the 8th year that the Muslim Youth Helpline (MYH) ran its flagship annual Prison Campaign.
Since the inception of the Prison Campaign in 2004 we have sent over 27,000 gifts out to Muslim prisoners all across the UK.
Annually the Prison Campaign raises awareness of the disproportionately high numbers of Muslim offenders, by calling to action community members to come together and remember their fellow Muslim’s who are spending the Muslim festival of Eid alone in prison.
This year we are sending gifts at Eid al Adha so that the young men and women in prison know there is a community out here for them.
“We think about what it would be like to be in prison, feeling cut off from your family, friends and community, and what would remind us that there are other young people that cared about us” MYH Volunteer
This year’s packs will Include, a prayer book, a Quran, sweets, a poster, message of support, Eid cards and a freepost envelope so prisoners can contact us if they need to.

According to current statistics, Muslims constitute around 12% of the male and female prison population, more than 4 times their representation in the wider population. In response to such statistics, in 2004, Muslim muslimyouth.net launched its inaugural Campaign entitled “Behind Bars” during the month of Ramadan to raise awareness of the plight of Muslim prisoners. Following intensive online and media coverage, Muslim Youth Helpline in conjunction with muslimyouth.net and Muslim Chaplains nationwide, distributed gift packages and messages of support to 1,053 Muslims in 19 prisons. On Eid al Fitr 2012, the campaign has reached 5500 prisoners over 55 prisons in the UK.
A young inmate wrote to MYH thanking them for the gift they received: “It feels amazing to be remembered. I am grateful for everything as I never expected anything.”
We would like to thank National Zakat Foundation, Al Azhar Academy and 3ADL for thier support to this years priosn campaign.

Young British Muslim Ex-Offenders and Resettlement Needs now published Young British Muslim Ex-Offenders and Resettlement Needs is a detailed report which has involved in-depth research and a series of interviews and aims to increase knowledge and raise awareness of the difficulties faced by ex-offenders during their resettlement periods.
It looks at the pathways to re-offending and scopes current service provision, identifying barriers to effective engagement and offers recommendations that should inform policy and practice. The role of the British Muslim community in contributing to the rehabilitation of Muslim ex-offenders is also highlighted within this research. This report will be essential reading for anyone currently working with young ex-offenders from Muslim communities or looking to work with ex-offenders, as well as for researchers and policy makers working in this area.
