Procrastination

Putting things off is rarely about being lazy. More often it is about the task feeling too big, or the fear of doing it badly. These six ideas are about making a start easier, not about working harder.

Collaborate

Try to collaborate with other people on projects, tasks and study sessions so that you feel accountable knowing that your friends or colleagues are relying on you.

Reward yourself

Give yourself a reward after completing a difficult task so that you feel a sense of accomplishment.

Do things as you go along

Complete tasks, essays and projects as and when you get them so that you can get them out of the way.

Optimal performance

Tackle the larger or more difficult tasks during your peak performance times.

Prioritise

Prioritise tasks by importance, time commitment and urgency so that you are only dedicating time to what is most important.

Distractions

Try temporarily muting your notifications so you’re not distracted by messages. Catch up on social media and messages after finishing a task so you’re not distracted.

If putting things off has started to affect your sleep, your studies or how you feel about yourself, it may be worth talking to someone. The Muslim Youth Helpline is free and confidential, open every day from 4pm to 10pm on 0808 808 2008. You can also chat with us online or email us.
